Sunflower Skirts Installation Exhibition - Here are some visitors' comments:
"Bold, passionate, powerful"- Kate and Rob Scott
"A very interesting and amazing show" - Gail Short
"Amazing stories and creativity." - Linda K. Sellers
Artist Michelle Loughery's The Wayfinder Sunflower Project, was started in 2013 during the painting of the Internment Sunflower Mural in Vernon, BC. in honour of discovering her family members were interned in Canada’s first national internment operations. Hundreds of sunflower seeds were planted and many sunflower paintings were inspired as an impetus to tell this important story, in the hope that through creative advocacy this would never happen again.
The importance of further conversation about internment, cultural history, human rights and social responsibility is imperative in these current Ukraine Crisis times. As part of the national conversation of the importance of the work to tell the stories of many.
Sept - Oct 2022! Sunflower Skirts - HERstory
Gallery Vertigo, in partnership with Artist Michelle Loughery and The Wayfinder Sunflower Project, is proud to present this community art installation exploring patterns and ornamentation on recycled clothing embellished with stitch, paint, glass, beadwork, and surface design. Each piece is an artist’s interpretation of a personal immigrant story or that of a friend, reflecting their journeys in Canada.
Curated by Aj Jaeger - Artist, it is a collection of textile artists who came together to create a story installation led by senior artists in a skills exchange intergenerational story experience. Featured Artists include Leslie Barnes, Anette Cameron, Lesley Comassar, Gloria Daly, Angela Hansen, Anni Hunt, Jennifer Greenwood, Aj Jaeger, Brittany Loughery Kette, Patricia Kozler, Michelle Loughery, Catherine Nicholls, Stacey Phinnemore, Brigitte Red, and Janet Scruggs.
Included as part of the installation is an opportunity for the public to add their stitches to a collaborative piece at the front of the gallery.
The installation titled “Sunflower Skirts” will explore patterns and ornamentation on skirts that women have worn in their journeys in Canada.
All ages will participate in flower, fabric, paint and other exploratory WAYFINDER art in action workshops that will result in an experience based art installation that will be displayed beyond the walls of the gallery. The Sunflower Skirts Stories will be shared on the Wayfinder Network Podcast AR:T ROUTE RADIO.
The collective piece of community art will be part of a collaborative art installation exhibition that will run from September 6 – October 20, 2022 at Gallery Vertigo #102 – 3105 28th Avenue, Vernon, BC.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 with light refreshments by donation.

"The Sunflower represents all nationalities that have had their freedoms and rights taken. As a symbol of strength, but also as a symbol of rebirth and creative energy to renew.
Through conversation we can recognize those who suffered from these injustices and, through greater awareness, ensure that similar injustices are less likely to be repeated in the future as we work towards a new renewal of Canada."
